Frequently Asked Questions

I don’t have any previous dance experience. Is square and round dancing still for me?
Absolutely! Square and round dancing is an enjoyable social activity regardless of your skill level. We dance for fun. There are no points and you won’t be judged – so there’s no pressure to be perfect or to ‘win’.
Do I need to be physically fit to square dance?
If you can walk, you can square dance. Just throw in a few flourishes, swings and twirls and you’ll be having a ball! As a form of regular cardiovascular exercise, dance is a great way to improve your overall fitness level while meeting new people and having fun.
Will I have to memorize a long list of dance sequences?
No, but you will need to learn some basic individual movements. Your caller / cuer will call out the movements to create the dance choreography. Not knowing what will come next as a dancer is part of the fun!
Is square dancing inter-generational?
Square dancing is a great inter-generational activity as it draws people of all ages who make it an activity that lasts a lifetime.  Some clubs have all three generations dancing in a square while other clubs are for teens and young adults.
What should I wear?
Many people enjoy wearing the country and western-style clothes often associated with square and round dancing, but it’s not a must! Some dancers prefer a nice blouse and ‘prairie-style’ skirt or jeans and a shirt. All you really need are clothes you can move in and a comfortable pair of shoes.
What if I don’t like Country music?
No worries! You can square and round dance to any music with a good beat. We dance to a wide variety of musical styles.
I don’t have a partner. Can I still dance?
Absolutely. We’ll pair you up with another single dancer, or an instructor. It’s a great way to meet new people!
I’ve heard about specialty dance clubs; what’s that about?
There are clubs specifically for gay or differently abled couples and individuals. Whatever your interests, there’s probably a club or event for you.
When is the next Square and Round Dancing Convention?

We hold a national convention every other year. The next convention is scheduled to take place  July 21, 22, 23, 2022 in Fredericton, New Brunswick. You can read more about it here.
